The Technical Sub-Committee on Naming, Registration and Release of Crop Varieties, Livestock Breeds and Fisheries is holding its 40th meeting today, Tuesday, 24 March 2026, at the National Centre for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (NACGRAB), Ibadan.
The meeting is hosted by the Secretariat of NACGRAB and brings together relevant experts and stakeholders to consider nominations for the registration and release of improved crop varieties.
59 Crop Varieties Under Consideration
A total of 59 varieties from 14 crops are being presented to the Technical Sub-Committee for consideration during the meeting.
The evaluation of these varieties is an important part of the process of ensuring that improved crop varieties meet the required standards before they are registered and released for use by farmers.
The meeting provides an opportunity for technical experts to assess the nominated varieties based on their relevant characteristics and potential contribution to agricultural production.
Supporting Food Security and Nutrition
The registration and release of improved crop varieties contribute to efforts to strengthen food production and improve nutritional outcomes.
By making suitable improved varieties available to farmers, Nigeria can expand the range of crop options available for cultivation while supporting productivity and the development of a more resilient agricultural sector.
