NEWLY REGISTERED AND RELEASED CROP VARIETIES AND LIVESTOCK BREED IN NIGERIA

 
At the 26th meeting of the National Committee on Naming, Registration and Release of Crop Varieties, Livestock Breeds/Fisheries, held on the 26th of July 2018 at NACGRAB, one (1) local breed chicken, seventeen (17) crop varieties and two (2) GMO varieties were released by the Committee. These include: one (1) Chicken breed (FUNAAB Alpha); One (1) Soybean variety (SC-SL01); five (5) Maize hybrids (P4226 (yellow), P3966 (white), P4063 (white), WE3205 (white) and DKB350 (yellow)); two (2) Open pollinated Maize varieties (AMANA-1 (white) and AMANA-2 (white)); one (1) Sweet potato variety (Solo Gold); three (3) Groundnut varieties (SAMNUT 27, SAMNUT 28 and SAMNUT 29); three (3) Sorghum varieties (SAMSORG 47, SAMSORG 48 and SAMSORG 49); two (2) Cowpea varieties (SAMPEA 18 and SAMPEA 19) and two (2) Transgenic hybrid Cotton (MAYCO C567 BGII and MAYCO C571 BGII).

 

FUNAAB Alpha chicken

-       FUNAAB Alpha was released and registered based on its adaptability to the production environment of local small-holder (and/or resource-poor) farmers, and; performance characteristic (body weight, live weight at end of lay, age at first egg, egg production, egg weight, survivability), which surpass those of the existing Nigerian local chickens.

 

SOYBEAN

-       Soybean variety (SC-SL01) was released and registered based on earliness, high yield potential and good pod clearance.

 

MAIZE HYBRIDS (P3966W (white), P4063W (White), P4226 (Yellow), WE3205 (white) and DKB350 (yellow))

-       Maize hybrid P3966W (white) was released and registered based on high grain yield and good standability.

-       Maize hybrid P4063W (White) was released and registered based on resistance to lodging, high grain yield, big kernels and excellent husk cover.

-       Maize hybrid P4226 (Yellow) was released and registered based on high grain yield, excellent stay-green characteristics, excellent husk cover and good standability.

-       Maize hybrid WE3205 (white) was released and registered based on tolerance to drought, early maturity and high grain yield.

-       Maize hybrid DKB350 (yellow) was released and registered based on tolerance to drought and high grain yield.

 

MAIZE OPV (AMANA-1 (white) and AMANA-2 (white))

-       Maize variety AMANA-1 (white) was released and registered based on high grain yield.

-       Maize variety AMANA-2 (white) was released and registered based on high grain yield and its prolific nature.

 

SWEETPOTATO

-       Sweetpotato variety Solo Gold was released and registered based on high root carotenoid content, high root yield, resistance to sweet potato virus disease and high dry matter content

 

SORGHUM (SAMSORG 47, SAMSORG 48 and SAMSORG 49)

-       Sorghum variety SAMSORG 47 was released and registered based on high grain yield.

-       Sorghum variety SAMSORG 48 was released and registered based on high grain yield.

-       Sorghum variety SAMSORG 49 was released and registered based on stay-green trait.

 

GROUNDNUT (SAMNUT 27, SAMNUT 28 and SAMNUT 29)

-       Groundnut variety SAMNUT 27 was released and registered based on early maturity and high pod yield.

-       Groundnut variety SAMNUT 28 was released and registered based on high pod and haulm yields.

-       Groundnut variety SAMNUT 29 was released and registered based on high pod and haulm yields.

 

COWPEA (SAMPEA 18 and SAMPEA 19)

-       Cowpea variety SAMPEA 18 was released and registered based on early maturity, resistance to Alectra and bacteria blight as well as tolerance to Striga and drought

-       Cowpea variety SAMPEA 19 was released and registered based on early maturity, tolerance to Striga and drought and resistance to Alectra.

 

COTTON HYBRID (MAYCO C567 BGII and MAYCO C571 BGII)

-       Transgenic hybrid Cotton MAYCO C567 BGII was released and registered based on resistance to bollworm, tolerance to sucking insect pests and high seed cotton yield.

-       Transgenic hybrid Cotton MAYCO C571 BGII was released and registered based on resistance to bollworm, high seed cotton yield, tolerance to sucking insect pests and early maturity.
