Newly Released Crop Varieties

During the 25th meeting of the National Committee on Naming, Registration & Release of Crop Varieties, Livestock Breeds/Fisheries, held on the 15th of June 2017 at NACGRAB, thirteen (13) crop varieties were released by the Committee. These include: Two (2) wheat varieties (LACRIWHIT 9 and LACRIWHIT 10); Three (3) maize varieties (SAMMAZ 52, SAMMAZ 53 and SAMMAZ 54); four (4) maize hybrids (SC612, SC649, DK390 and DK7508); two (2) rice varieties (FARO 66 and FARO 67); One (1) pureline rice variety (GAWAL R1) and one (1) sugarcane variety (NCS-009).

 

WHEAT (LACRIWHIT 9 and LACRIWHIT 10)

Wheat variety LACRIWHIT 9 and LACRIWHIT 10 were recommended for release based on heat tolerance, high tuber yield and good baking quality.

 

MAIZE OPV (SAMMAZ 52, SAMMAZ 53 and SAMMAZ 54)

Maize variety SAMMAZ 52 was recommended for release based on intermediate levels of pro-vitamin A content (9.3µg/g).

Maize variety SAMMAZ 53 and SAMMAZ 54 were recommended for release based on extra-early maturity, high grain yield, tolerance to drought and Striga hermonthica.

 

MAIZE HYBRIDS (SC612, SC649, DK390 and DK7508)

Maize hybrid SC612 was recommended for release based on tolerance to drought, high yield potential and good husk cover.

Maize hybrid SC649 was recommended for release based on high yield potential and good husk cover.

Maize hybrid DK390 was recommended for release based on high grain yield and good standability.

Maize hybrid DK7508 was recommended for release based on high grain yield.

 

RICE (FARO 66, FARO 67 and GAWAL R1)

Rice variety Faro 66 was recommended for release based on submergence tolerance, high grain yield, long and medium slender grains and moderately tolerant to iron toxicity.

Rice variety Faro 67 was recommended for release based on submergence tolerance, high grain yield, long and slender grains and tolerance to iron toxicity.

Rice variety GAWAL R1 was recommended for release based on high grain yield and tolerance to blast disease.

 

SUGARCANE (NCS-009)

Sugarcane variety NCS-009 was recommended for release based on high cane and sugar yield and tolerant to smut.
